Halloween Party Calculator — Sweets & Decorations
Calculate sweets, pumpkins, and decorations for your Halloween celebration.
How We Calculate This
This calculator estimates sweet quantities, party-food and drink amounts, and total Halloween spending.
Formula
- Total sweets = trick-or-treaters × sweets each × (1 + buffer%), rounded up. The buffer (default 20%) covers unexpected callers.
- Bags to buy = total sweets ÷ sweets per bag, rounded up
- Sweets cost = bags × cost per bag
- Party food = guests × 8 finger-food pieces (party-as-meal buffet)
- Soft drinks = guests × ~1 litre for the evening
- Grand total = sweets + pumpkins + decorations
Frequently Asked Questions
Budget 4-6 sweets per trick-or-treater. In a busy neighbourhood, you might get 50-100+ visitors. In quieter areas, 10-30. Last year's numbers are your best guide. Always buy 20% extra - it is better to have leftover sweets than to run out and disappoint children.
One large pumpkin by the front door is the minimum. For a party, place pumpkins along the path and on tables. A good display uses 3-5 pumpkins of different sizes. Carving pumpkins cost £2-£5 each from supermarkets or £1-£3 from farms and markets.
A carved pumpkin with a candle is the classic must-have. Fake spider webs, battery-operated candles, and a spooky door wreath make a big impact cheaply. For parties, add dim lighting, themed tableware, and cobweb tablecloths. Budget £20-£50 for a good home display.
Individually wrapped sweets are best (Haribo, mini chocolate bars, Swizzels). Avoid nuts (allergies), unwrapped sweets (hygiene concerns), and very small items (choking hazard for little ones). Fun-size chocolate bars are always popular. Buy multipacks for the best value.
For a Halloween party where finger food replaces a meal, allow about 8 savoury items per guest (UK caterers suggest 8-10 pieces per head for a party buffet, and alcohol nudges this higher). Enter your guest count and the calculator estimates total party-food pieces plus roughly 1 litre of soft drinks or punch per guest for the evening. These are separate from the trick-or-treat sweets, which are for callers at the door.
