Party Playlist Calculator — Songs, Timing & Genre Mix

Work out exactly how long a playlist to prepare for your party, accounting for breaks, a safety buffer, and phase-by-phase song counts.

Total duration of the party or event from start to finish — include the time music will be playing, not just the formal programme

Average length of tracks on your playlist — use 3.5 mins for pop and dance, 4–5 mins for older rock or soul, or check your streaming app's average

How often music stops for speeches, toasts, games or natural pauses — 45 minutes is typical for a casual party; 60–90 minutes for a formal dinner

How long each break lasts — allow 5 minutes for a toast, 10–15 minutes for a speech or game, or 20–30 minutes for a sit-down meal course

The overall genre style of your playlist — used to generate phase-by-phase suggestions for what type of tracks to include at each stage of the evening

How We Calculate This

The calculator subtracts planned break time from the total event duration to find net music time, then divides by average song length for the core song count.

Core calculation

Number of breaks = Floor(Event duration / Break frequency interval)

Total break time = Number of breaks × Break duration

Net music time = Event duration − Total break time

Songs needed = Net music time / Avg song length

Buffer and phase split

A percentage buffer is added to give flexibility on the night. The buffered total is then split by phase percentages (arrival, main, wind-down) which you can customise in Advanced Options.
