Toilet Hire Calculator — Portable Toilet Requirements
Calculate how many portable toilets, accessible units, and hand wash stations you need for your event.
Adds +20% capacity, as drinks increase toilet usage
How We Calculate This
The calculator estimates toilet requirements based on:
- Usage rate: ~0.45 visits per person per hour (already allows for normal peak demand)
- Alcohol factor: +20% usage when alcohol is served (15–20% industry range)
- Gender split: A 50/50 crowd is the baseline; a female-heavy crowd needs slightly more capacity and a male-heavy crowd slightly less (about ±15% at the extremes)
- Each unit: A chemical unit holds ~200 uses before servicing
This model lands at roughly 1 standard unit per 100 guests for a 4-hour event, in line with the UK rule of thumb (rising towards 1 per 75 for longer or food/alcohol events). Accessible units follow 1 per 200 guests or 1 per 10 standard units, whichever is greater.
Frequently Asked Questions
As a rough guide, allow around 1 standard unit per 100 guests for events up to about 6 hours. For longer events, or whenever food and alcohol are served, increase to roughly 1 unit per 75 guests. Festival-density crowds may need 1 per 50. Always include at least 1 accessible unit and adequate hand washing facilities.
Yes. UK toilet-hire firms recommend adding roughly 15–20% extra capacity when alcohol is served (this calculator uses +20%). Events with free-flowing drinks or an open bar should size up accordingly, as peak usage often follows drinks service.
Yes. The Equality Act requires adequate accessible facilities at events open to the public. The industry rule of thumb is 1 accessible unit per 200 guests, or 1 per 10 standard units, whichever is greater, with a minimum of 1. These are also useful for guests with pushchairs or young children.
For events up to 4 hours, pre-event stocking is usually sufficient. For 4-8 hour events, one mid-event service is recommended. Full-day or multi-day events need servicing every 6 hours. More frequent servicing is needed when alcohol is served.
Luxury trailer units offer a better experience with flushing toilets, hand basins, and lighting. They are popular for weddings, corporate events, and premium parties. Consider replacing every third standard unit with a luxury unit if budget allows.
